In 1778 George Rogers Clark and King Louis XVI of France founded Louisville, Kentucky. George Roger's Clark moved his people to Corn Island in the middle of the Ohio River while they fought the British and Indians for the land where Louisville now resides. Once the battle was won the settlers moved from Corn Island and established Fort Nelson. The King gave us the name Louisville; Louis- from his name and Ville- small village. Several other cities in the United States are named Louisville however we pronounce ours differently (think Looey-ville) in honor of King "Looey".
